As commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT consortium for promotion of IB education in Japan was established in May 2018 with the aim of disseminating the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs in Japan.

In Japan, IB diploma graduates who have reached the age of 18 are eligible for university admission (These students are not required to take high school equivalency tests.)

The number of Japanese universities that list the IB qualification as part of application eligibility in their admission application guidelines and that take the IB scores into consideration when screening candidate students is increasing.
